    How To Make It

    1. Tear off the striking surface from a book of paper matches and place it in a metal pan, cardboard side up.
    2. Light the cardboard and let it burn.
    3. After it has burned, there should be a reddish residue on the pan. Let it cool.
    4. Wipe your fingertip and thumb on the residue. Rub your fingertip and thumb together, and you should get smoke.

    Notes:

    The residue contains red phosphorus, which oxidizes at the low temperature caused by the friction between your thumb and finger. If you do this in the dark, you will see an eerie greenish glow.
