For example, reindeer and Musk Ox. The Arctic is a big place with various types of climate.How does a Penguin keep their eggs warm?Penguins usually lay only one egg during the dark days of winter. One Penguin sits on the egg, holding it off the ice with it's feet until it hatches two months later.What do Penguins eat?Penguins feed mainly on fish, squid and small shrimp like krill. They dive deep underwater using their feet as rudders and come to the surface for air. They are very fast and skillful swimmers.Can Penguins fly?Although Penguin have a small pair of wings, they do not fly.How many kinds of Penguins are there?There are 18 different kinds of Penguin and they all live near the coasts of the southern oceans. Many live in the frozen region of Antarctica.How do Polar Bears keep their babies warm?Female Polar Bears dig a den in a snowdrift and give birth to their cubs in midwinter. This protects them from the severe cold and wind. The tiny cubs stay in the den for about 3 months.What do baby Polar Bears eat?Baby Polar Bears drink the milk from their mother. The mother polar Bear does not eat from midwinter until spring. She stays in the den to feed and protect her young.When do baby Polar Bears come out of the den?Baby Polar Bears come out of their den in the spring. During this time the mother spends most of her time looking for food, such as seals, to feed herself and her young.Why don't Polar Bears slip on the ice?Polar Bears have very hairy feet which helps them grip the ice and their sharp claws enable them to take an even firmer grip.How big are Blue Whales?Blue Whales are the largest living animal on earth. They are about 72 feet long and weigh around 140,000 pounds!How long do Blue Whales live?Blue Whales can live up to 90 years.What do Blue Whales eat?Blue Whales do not have teeth, therefore, they filter tiny krill through baleen plates hanging from their upper jaws. An adult Blue Whale eats about 8,000 pounds of krill a day!Where do seals give birth?Seals give birth to a single, white-coated pup in snow dens on either landfast or drifting pack ice during March and April. Female seals build lairs in pressure ridges or under snowdrifts for protection from predators and severe weather. The average weight of pups at birth is 10 pounds. Pups nurse for about two months and during that time the pup doubles its birth weight.What is so special about Arctic Hares?Artic Hares have long, sharp claws for digging in hard snow for food and fur that changes color. Their hair is white in the winter to blend in with the snow and molts and turns brown in the summer to blend into the Tundra.How do polar animals keep warm?Arctic animals have excellent insulation to stop their body heat from escaping. They may have dense hair, fur or feathers, or have a think layer of fat or blubber. |
