One day you open up your email program and find a letter from a friend. You begin to read about your pals wild Friday night out with their friends. Next thing you know, your pal is telling you all about how they went to a store and stole a bunch of things. First, you need to understand that a crime can be anything from stealing and causing a disturbance to molestation and murder. Second, you need to understand the definition of "Accessory after the fact". It means, one who hides an offender or fails to report an offence.
If you are anything like me, you are going to find your mouth dangling open as you read your email. You will sit back in your chair and stare at your computer. Then it will slowly dawn on you how serious this matter is. Your friend just confessed to a crime. You will have the same reaction if this confession happened in a real life situation.
Your friend has just placed you in a very uncomfortable position. They may have made you an accessory after the fact. That is a criminal charge. After squirming around and pacing for a while, you know there is only one thing you can do. Yup, tell your parents. Let them handle it. By telling your parents as soon as you find out, you are proving to them that you listen to their lectures and you have become a responsible person why can be trusted.
Your friend will probably get really mad at you for telling. Now ask yourself, do you really care? Don't forget that this person brought this upon themselves by involving you. You are the only person who has the right to decide what to do about your own situation. Besides, you do not need a friend who commits crimes. That can only lead to trouble. You did the right thing. In reality you are hero. |
